Government Building
UX Design Approach to Building Renovation
Design Process: Quick Overview
Background
A government organization is responsible for maintaining buildings and structures in various locations tasked my design firm with a major renovation and retrofitting.
Challenge
Renovate and retrofit an existing building to accommodate expanded operations and personnel. This projects the many parallels in the design processes of architecture and user experience design.
Approach
Interviewed staff at current facilities, adapted approved guidelines to local conditions and created drawings and models to ensure compliance with requirements.
My Roles
On-site survey and documentation • Construction drawings • 3D digital models • High quality renderings
1. Research
Pre-Design
Comprehensive guidelines and templates are provided by the client, but allow for project-specific tailoring. An on-site visit is then made to observe day-to-day functions and meet with potential users.
User Personas
The building will host a wide range of activities, so multiple personas are create to reflect the different types of people. using it.
Brainstorming
An adjacency matrix is created to have guidelines meet real-world conditions.
2. Design
Wireframing
Abstract arrangements are made to test the relationships between spaces. More levels of detail are later added.
Prototyping
Design is further refined with more levels of detail added, including material finishes. A second and more extensive on-site survey was completed to ensure that design assumptions accurately reflected site conditions.
Usability Testing (3D Models)
Abstract models from schematic design are updated with more detail to help client visualize the space.
Partial Construction
Some of the design elements were later constructed.
